- The death toll in the Ormonde building collapse has risen to eight after two more workers died.
- President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for an inquest as investigations reveal no approved building plans.
- Search teams continue efforts to find three workers still trapped under the rubble.
Two more people have died following the construction building collapse in Ormonde, south of Joburg, yesterday afternoon.
The deaths of two additional construction workers were confirmed on Tuesday morning. The duo was trapped under the rubble after the building collapsed.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear at this stage; however, Cyril Ramaphosa has called for an inquest to provide clear answers to the families of the deceased and survivors.
Meanwhile, Johannesburg City Manager Floyd Brink says someone needs to be held accountable for approving the construction of the building.
Brink says preliminary investigations have found no evidence of approved building plans for the structure.
Search and recovery efforts are continuing for three other workers who remain trapped under the rubble.
Brink has gone as far as admitting that there is a serious issue of lawlessness in parts of the city.
At the same time, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has revealed that the owners of the building are nowhere to be found.
Morero says the city has, however, identified the company that owns the building.
The contractors linked to the construction have also gone AWOL. This is despite the fact that they were on site shortly after the collapse on Monday.
Mayor Dada Morero says there are no approved building plans for this construction, adding that what has happened appears to be criminal.
