Orlando Pirates star Mbokazi offered legendary advice

What an extraordinary rise to inspire the budding Orlando Pirates youth.

One minute, Mbokazi was an unknown left-footed centre-back in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), the next, he’s captaining South Africa’s U-20s before winning the Match of the Match award for Bafana Bafana against mighty Nigeria.

One of the club’s former iconic defenders, Gavin Lane, has taken notice.

MBEKEZELI MBOKAZI BECOMES AN ORLANDO PIRATES SUPERSTAR

The 20-year-old Hluhluwe, affectionately called “TLB,” was given his senior debut by former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro in March 2025 against Chippa United, and he has never looked back since.

He helped the Sea Robbers to finish second in the Betway Premiership and narrowly miss out on the CAF Champions League final, falling to Pyramids FC. Coming into the new season, Mbokazi captained the side in several big games, including the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC.

The Bucs skipper stepped into the international scene for Bafana Bafana before his 20th birthday, in a 2-0 win over Mozambique, before the performance against Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, leaving coach Hugo Broos calling for his move to Europe.

GAVIN LANE ADVICE

Former Orlando Pirates captain Gavin Lane, speaking on the SoccerBeat podcast, didn’t hold back praise, but also threw in some insightful advice…

“He has all the talents he needs, and the physicality,” Lane said. “But stay level-headed. Don’t think you’ve made Bafana and get a big head. Some guys in our era splashed money on fancy cars too soon. Work hard, listen to the coaches, and keep your feet on the ground.”

Then, with a laugh, Lane added: “Ja, he’s a great player. I’m happy he’s at Orlando Pirates.”
