The world of South African football is bidding farewell to one of its most respected figures as former Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela has officially announced his retirement from the professional game at the age of 32.

The highly-regarded defender, known for his distinguished career spanning over 15 years, confirmed he has decided to hang up his boots after a monumental spell with the Soweto giants.

The news brings to a close an era for a player whose leadership and commitment earned him legend status in Mzansi football.

Maela joined the Buccaneers in 2017 from Thanda Royal Zulu, and his subsequent career cemented his legacy with the club. He amassed 200 appearances for Pirates, a testament to his consistency and importance to the team.

The defender’s journey with the club began in the Pirates Development Academy, where he first honed his craft.

After a period away to gain vital professional experience, he returned to the club and rose to prominence. His exemplary conduct saw him handed the captain’s armband in 2022, following in the footsteps of revered figures in the club’s history.

During his tenure, Maela was a central figure in a hugely successful period, lifting six major trophies. His silverware haul includes two Nedbank Cups and an impressive four MTN8 titles.
