Onyango Opens Up On Downs’ Contract Talks

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has admitted that he wants to stay with the DStv Premiership champions, with his current contract coming to an end soon.
Onyango clinched a record-extending 10th league title when Sundowns were crowned the 2022/23 DStv Premiership winners, in a season where he has played more of a supporting role to first choice Ronwen Williams.
Speaking to iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu in edition 105 of the newspaper, the former Uganda captain revealed that his representatives are in talks with the club over a new deal.
“Yes, of course, my contract is coming to an end but we are in talks with the club to try and retain me,” Onyango told iDiski Times.
“I’m hoping that the club will retain me because the fans are like I’m going to be around the club next season. So for me, I’m happy with the decision that the club will take but we are still finalising.”
Onyango also confirmed that the club has indicated they would support him to take the first steps into coaching towards the latter stages of his career.
“The club looking at it and saying, ‘Denis, if you have the opportunity to go and become whatever you want, whether a goalkeeper coach or administrator you’re welcome to do that’,” he aded.
“You know when one door closes the other opens. Of course the club is there, the opportunity is there and the club is really trying to help in whatever activity you want to do.”
