Olympic athletes scramble for eggs

Feeding over 15,000 athletes is a big challenge, and the main restaurant at the Olympic Village in Paris is struggling.

Athletes have complained about the food quality and a shortage of breakfast eggs on Wednesday morning, despite promises of Michelin-star dining.

Sodexo Live!, the official catering partner, admitted to French sports newspaper L’Équipe that there had been “a very high demand” for items like grilled meats and eggs.

A spokesperson for Carrefour, which supplies fresh products, said they will increase quantities to meet the athletes’ needs.

The main restaurant can seat 3,300 diners and features menus from Michelin-starred chefs Amandine Chaignot, Alexandre Mazzia, and Akrame Benallal.

However, due to reports of raw meat being served, Team GB brought their own chefs and hired a catering college in Clichy to prepare meals.

The Paris Games have strict quality standards for all food. A quarter of the ingredients come from within 250 km of Paris, and 20% are organic.

All meat, milk, and eggs are French, and a third of the food is plant-based.

Vegetarian options include beefless bourguignon and “not-dogs” with onions and pickled cabbage in a honey-mustard sauce.

Over the two 15-day periods of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, more than 13 million meals will be served.

Organisers have promised to donate leftovers to those in need and use used coffee grounds as fertiliser.
