NUM and NUMSA accepts Eskom’s 7% wage increase offer

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at Eskom have given the company’s wage offer the green light.

Earlier, trade union Solidarity confirmed that its members too have accepted Eskom’s new wage offer. Union leaders say they expect to sign a settlement agreement when they meet with Eskom on Tuesday afternoon.

Eskom has offered workers 7% salary increases across the board and R400 hikes in housing allowance.

However, workers have pitched a new demand of a R15,000 once off payment that will be presented to Eskom.

Leaders of the two unions have just concluded a shop-steward council in Woodmead, Johannesburg.

Eskom said it’s this strike action that’s to blame for the latest bout of power cuts.

William Mabapa, NUM general secretary said: “We were having a joint meeting with Numsa and NUM so that we can consolidate on a position and I can confirm that we have consolidated on one position and we have been given a mandate.

“We are going to sign. So, we are meeting with Eskom after lunch so probably we can assure that we have a mandate to sign today.”
