Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki says they have a plan to overcome the ‘dark cloud’ of not winning a trophy in eight years.
After missing out on the MTN8, Chiefs now turn their attention to the Carling Knockout Cup where they were drawn with AmaZulu in the first round of the returning competition.
With the DStv Premiership title seemingly out of reach at this early stage of the season, the realistic targets are now the domestic cup competitions on offer.
And Ntseki said they need to go back to what made them one of the most successful teams in the country and be more prepared than their opposition.
“The understanding we have, before the dark cloud what was there, and if the dark cloud is hanging over your head, how do you get rid or move away from the dark cloud, that is what we are doing currently,” Ntseki said.
“We all know there wasn’t a dark cloud before, what worked for Chiefs… we’re looking into more background, researching what worked for the club before the dark cloud you speak of. If there’s one, how do we evade it, how do we move away from this dark cloud?
“The most important things are preparation, giving the players confidence, having a clear tactical understanding, clear game model and also giving respect to the analysis of our opponents, I think the game has evolved – there’s no weaker team.
“Every team comes into games prepared well, with proper analysis, the analysis we do on the opposition is also being done to us, so the most important thing is being tactically flexible, especially approaching cup games.
“It’s knockout [competition] we have to be clear within the 90 minutes and for us to go to the final… this is the most important thing [to focus on] getting beyond the last-16, to get to the last two, you need to win the first game.”
Chiefs will host Usuthu on Saturday afternoon at the FNB Stadium (18h00).
