After going hungry for almost three months, students at all campuses of Mfolozi TVET College will now get some assistance.
This is after the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) made an undertaking to college management that all outstanding allowances would be paid out by the end of today.
Students have been complaining that since June this year, the fund has been paying them only R300 instead of R1,300 per month. That saw the students going hungry and lessons interrupted.
The learning process was interrupted mainly in Eshowe and Nkandla campuses after students went on strike.
In Eshowe, the leadership of the SRC had to go out with a begging bowl to ask for donations from the local municipality in order for the students to have food to eat.
After weeks of back and forth, today the campus said Nsfas told it that all monies owed to learners would be paid out.
College spokesperson Bhekani Ndlovu said the fund told them that there was a technical glitch and it has since been resolved.
“Nsfas told us that by 1pm today the money would start reflecting in bank accounts of learners. The money would include all that is being owed, meaning that learners will get R3,300,” Ndlovu told Scrolla.Africa when asked about the matter.
SRC secretary Olwethu Mdletshe confirmed that they recently approached the Umlalazi local municipality for donations to feed the starving learners.
He also confirmed that they have been told all the outstanding money would be paid out later today.
“The matter has been resolved,” Mdletshe said.
