A bus carrying 44 passengers went off Van Rhyns Pass in the Western Cape, killing nine people on Monday evening.

The crash happened at around 5:30 pm on the R27 near Vredendal.

Simon Zwane, spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), said the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

He explained that the bus hit the side of a mountain slope, causing the driver to lose control and roll down the hill.

Emergency services, including Van Rhynsdorp SAPS, quickly arrived at the scene. Several other passengers were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In separate incidents, 21 people died in three car accidents in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.

The deadliest of these was on the R622 Mooi Plaza on Greytown Road, where a collision between two vehicles resulted in 12 deaths.

Another serious accident on the R74 Kranskop Road involved members of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK party), resulting in six deaths and ten serious injuries. There were also more deaths reported in a crash on the N2 near Stanger.

Police are investigating these accidents, and cases of culpable homicide have been opened.
