Tyla at the 68th Grammy Awards
Tyla’s victory at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards has sparked mixed reactions across social media.
On Sunday night, the South African star clinched the Best African Music Performance award for her hit single Push 2 Start, beating a strong lineup of Nigerian heavyweights in the category.
Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, Wizkid and Burna Boy were all nominated, but it was Tyla who walked away with the trophy, thanks to the massive global success of her chart-topping song.
The 24-year-old quickly began trending across multiple platforms, with fans celebrating her achievement as she became a two-time Grammy winner.
However, the win also drew criticism, particularly from some Nigerian users who questioned the Recording Academy’s decision and accused the Grammys of overlooking other deserving nominees.
“Davido deserved this one. Tyla’s win is impressive and her run has been incredible, but based on impact, longevity and contribution to African music on the global stage, this award should have gone to Davido. Recognition should balance momentum with legacy, and in this category, Davido edged it,” one X user wrote.
Another commenter added, “I swear Davido was clearly robbed again. What’s Push 2 Start?”
An X user echoed similar sentiments, writing, “Davido should’ve won it. The Grammys are becoming irrelevant.”
You may not like the girl ooo but that song was the biggest in that category ( before you argue check the numbers).
