Ngizwe Mchunu jets to the US on Mandela Day mission for peace amid coup fears
Former Ukhozi FM presenter Ngizwe Mchunu flies to the United States to help bring peace to South Africa.
In a Facebook livestream, the self-declared “President of the Bhinca Nation” shared that his visit is tied to rising tensions back home, including recent talks of a potential coup.
His trip comes just days after Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, confirmed that the government had picked up signs of a possible coup attempt.
Ngizwe urged young people not to be swayed into panic or rash decisions, saying, “Let’s not allow old people to keep taking over. Let’s remain calm and respect the rule of law.”
While in the US, Ngizwe revealed plans to visit the South African Embassy on 17 July 2025, claiming he was part of a peace initiative aimed at addressing the country’s political climate.
“The rumours of security clashes in our country are not right at all,” he said during his livestream.
“I am in the USA to meet people from the South African Embassy under the peace committee to explain to them what kind of problem South Africa is facing.”
He added that he would continue his mission in Washington, DC, on Mandela Day, 18 July, referencing the global icon’s legacy.
“Tomorrow I will be in Washington, working, so please let’s continue to be at peace, just as Nelson Mandela preached peace.”
Though Ngizwe didn’t go into full detail about his “urgent” agenda in the US, he hinted that he was handling a sensitive issue. Meanwhile, government officials back home have assured the public that they are aware of the threats and actively monitoring them.
“There are people planning, yes,” said Ntshavheni, “but we are continuously monitoring and making sure we deal with those threats.”
