New Venue For Stellies Vs Chiefs Confirmed

Stellenbosch will be hosting Kaizer Chiefs in the DStv Premiership next weekend, but the fixture will NOT be played at the Danie Craven Stadium.

This is following the chaos that happened in August at the Stellenbosch ground where supporters invaded the pitch on two occasions. Chiefs were fined for their fans’ behaviour at the game, which was organised by the PSL, due to it being an MTN8 fixture.

Now with this upcoming fixture being a league game, and all organisation done by the club, Stellies have moved the game to the Cape Town Stadium.

This is not the first time that the club will host fixtures in Cape Town rather than Stellenbosch, as this was the case in their first season in the top flight when no ground in Stellenbosch was deemed fit to host games.

But since the 2020/2021 campaign, Steve Barker’s team have made the DC Stadium their home ground and will be disappointed not to play in front of their growing fan base.

“Yes, yeah. But I think it’s best to play Chiefs, after the last time, at Cape Town Stadium,” Barker told iDiski Times.

“Ja, so looking forward to two games in a week. Cape Town Stadium, we’re quite familiar with it. We’ve played a number of times there. So ja, six points on hand at home in the next week, hopefully we can maximize.

“There are players that live out that side, so ja, it is home from home. Obviously, ideally, you would want to be playing every game in Stellenbosch.

“But we understand the reasoning and the thought behind not playing it there. So ja, it’s always a nice occasion hosting Chiefs, always a big crowd, it just adds to the occasion.

“So ja, that’s also another sort of match, that I’m a bit sad today because I felt that we should have been playing. We should have got past Chiefs in the quarter-finals of the MTN so a little tinge of sadness that we’re not on the park today, but it is what it is.”

Before welcoming Chiefs, Stellies host Maritzburg United at the DC Stadium on Tuesday, where they will look to improve on their current 11th position. With the league very tight at the moment, a good win, and other results going their way could see them climb as high as fourth.

“Ja, it’s a strange league currently, I think, you’re four points off bottom and you’re four points off second,” Barker added.

“It’s a very tight situation that we’re in. It’s a bad result against Richards Bay, had we probably got more out of the game than we deserved, you would be sitting in a decent position.

“But ja, a lot to play for. Obviously, Maritzburg at home are those types of games that you really have to be winning, if you want to be challenging at the right end of the table.”
