New Chippa United head coach Siyabulela Gwambi says he has Chairman Siviwe Mpengesi’s support after being set a mandate of retaining their DStv Premiership status.
Gwambi was appointed in the role last week, succeeding Kurt Lentjies, and he lost his first game in charge, 3-1 to Marumo Gallants in Polokwane on Wednesday night.
The result saw the Chilli Boys drop into the relegation zone to 15th with 26 points in 26 matches. Gwambi says there is support and they have full confidence of staying up.
“Definitely there is full support because now we have to put a new experiment and see if it’s going to work,” he said.
“Now we have to go and fix ahead of the Nedbank Cup and see if we have to make changes.
“If we have to then we will do so but if we don’t have to then we will try and have a consistent line-up going forward ahead of the Chiefs game.”
There are 12 points to play for and Gwambi who has been in the position before is also relying on his past experience to be able to save the team.
“Experience wise two seasons ago if you might remember I was in a similar position so it’s not even a difficult thing to do,” he added.
“If I believe, you expect the others to follow suit. So it is a matter of making them believe that we can do it – by making reference to where we are coming from – a few seasons back we were in the same position.
“This is what we achieved. So it is achievable. There are 12 points to play for, it’s a lot and I mean we still have two home games we must take advantage of, you never know what might happen.”
The Chilli Boys are next in action against Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
