South African winger Percy Tau has received the backing of new Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller.

Tau, 28, has been sidelined with an injury since August. Overall, Tau has missed 16 of Al Ahly’s last 21 games at the end of last season.

However, he is now close to full fitness after stepping his recovery program ahead of the new campaign.

With Tau close to group training, new coach Koller had a chat with the winger to “support him morally”, the club confirmed via a statement.

“Percy Tau, Al-Ahly’s first team football player, is in the final stage of his rehabilitation program to prepare him to return to participate in group training, after making sure of his complete recovery and his readiness to be with the team,” the statement reads as translated into English.

“Tau trained in the gym and then completed his program inside the touch stadium under the supervision of Tariq Abdel Aziz, the rehabilitation specialist, and it included running around the field and some light exercises with the ball and implementing some paragraphs within his qualifying program, in which the player cut a great stage on the way back again to group sharing.

“The team’s coach, Marcel Koehler, was keen to speak with Percy Tau during his rehabilitation program to check on his condition and support him morally.”

Al Ahly start their new campaign with a CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie against Monastir on 9 October, while their first domestic game will be the Egyptian Super Cup against bitter rivals Zamalek on 28 October.
