The war of words between the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) and Bheki Mtolo, the provincial secretary of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, is getting worse.
Mtolo told Ukhozi FM on Monday that he would not apologise for saying that Nehawu members are responsible for poor services in home affairs, hospitals and the South African Social Security Agency.
Mtolo commented on Nehawu’s shortcomings at the weekend while addressing elderly people in his hometown of Kokstad.
He accused Nehawu members, especially labour inspectors, of being corrupt and taking bribes from white farmers, falsely reporting that farm workers are treated and paid well.
In the interview, Mtolo stood by his remarks and refused to apologise.
“When I joined the struggle, I took an oath to speak the truth, even if it meant death for me,” he said when asked if he would apologise within 48 hours as demanded by Nehawu.
He was responding to Nehawu’s claim that the ANC betrayed its principles by forming a government of national unity with parties like the DA and the Freedom Front Plus.
Nehawu’s provincial secretary, Ayanda Zulu, promised to “isolate” Mtolo.
Zulu said if Mtolo did not apologise, they would prevent him from speaking at gatherings in the province and follow him everywhere to disrupt him.
“We will look for him everywhere, in the sky, on the ground, and even underwater. He will not rest,” Zulu said.
