Ncobo On Chiefs’ Yellow Controversy

Former FIFA referee Ace Ncobo has analysed the yellow card confusion in Kaizer Chiefs’ match against Mamelodi Sundowns, saying Victor Gomes got his decision spot on.

Downs were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute of the game after Siyabonga Ngezana had fouled Peter Shalulile inside the box.

However, Ngezana’s teammate, Zitha Kwinika did receive a yellow card, with many wondering whether it was a case of mistaken identity by match official Victor Gomes or whether Kwinika was booked for something he said.

After SAFA Head of Referees already explained Kwinika was booked for dissent, Ncobo echoed the sentiment.

“I know it has been a raging debate that it was a mistaken identity, but it was not,” he said on Extra Time.

“The player that committed the foul did not deserve a yellow card and correctly the referee did not show him a yellow card.

“But the player, Kwinika, showed dissent with both action and words towards the referee and having given that decision, that’s where the yellow card came from – dissent.

“He said something, we’re not going to deliberate it, he said something that was worthy of a caution.”

When being asked how Gomes had made up his mind so quick to book Kwinika after pointing to the spot, Ncobo explains that the referee probably wanted to send a message.

“When he speaks to the referee, the moment the referee points to the spot, look at his action,” he added.

“The referee gives the foul. If you look at the white short, you see that at the moment the referee gives the foul, the concentration is not on the player that comments the foul [Ngezana], but look at the player behind him, that player that shows dissent.

“He shows dissent by action and later he shows dissent by words.

“And you know Victor Gomes wants to take control of the match. In a high-pressure situation like that he’s going to take action and sends a strong message that ‘I’m not going to take any trouble from anybody’.
