Orlando Pirates co-coach Mandla Ncikazi has vowed to throw all their arsenal and focus 100% on the Caf Confederations Cup as it is their only hope of finishing the 2021/22 campaign with silverware.
The former Golden Arrows coach, who joined Pirates at the start of the season, insists they are not in the semis to add numbers.
The Bucs have not had an excellent domestic season. They are fifth in the DStv Premiership and got eliminated in the MTN8 quarter-finals and the Nedbank Cup Last 16 by Swallows FC and Marumo Gallants.
“We are in it to win it. We should not be in this competition to make up numbers. With the history that this club has done it before [in 1995], we should win,” Ncikazi told the media.
“Pirates have always been in African championships. I don’t think there is anything new. It also helps us that some of the players have been part of that history. So it helps with that experience.”
Ncikazi further stated that his wish is to lift Africa’s most elite club silverware, the Champions League.
“My wish is that Pirates should get into the main one, which is the Champions League, without saying the Confederation Cup is the easier one; it’s still a big honour,” he added.
On Sunday, the Buccaneers will take on Libya giants Ahli Tripoli at Martyrs of February Stadium. Kick-off is at 18:00.
