South African Afro-soul singer Nathi Mankayi says he has been left “speechless” by the overwhelming response to his Buyelekhaya Tour, more than a decade after the release of his acclaimed debut album.

The 43-year-old musician, whose 2015 album Buyelekhaya introduced fans to songs such as Nomvula, Imibuzo, Noba Ngumama and Ndenzenjani, is currently taking the project back to the stage in a nationwide celebration of his musical journey.
According to Daily Sun, the demand for tickets has exceeded Mankayi’s expectations, with several shows selling out quickly.
Nathi admitted that the level of support has surprised him, saying, “I don’t know why people love me so much. I was overwhelmed and shocked. In fact, I’m out of words.”
Mankayi also said the rapid ticket sales have demonstrated that his music continues to connect with audiences years after the album was first released. The strong demand has also resulted in additional dates being added in some cities, including Cape Town and Durban.

The tour opened at the State Theatre in Pretoria in July, where the reception was particularly emotional.
News24 reported that hundreds of fans sang along to Mankayi’s catalogue, turning the concert into what felt like a reunion between the artist and listeners who have carried his music with them over the years.
For Mankayi, the reaction has reinforced Buyelekhaya’s enduring power.
In an interview with GQ South Africa, Mankayi said the album continues to resonate because its themes address everyday life and challenges experienced by different generations, particularly within Black communities. He also described the music as something deeper than entertainment, saying that he has learned that some people depend on his songs for healing.
“I have learned that being in the music industry is not only about singing; it is about healing people.”

Still a hit project
The continuing popularity of Buyelekhaya is particularly significant given that the album was released in 2015. At the time, Mankayi quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s leading Afro-soul voices, with Nomvula becoming a major hit. Contemporary reporting noted that the album achieved multi-platinum status within months of its release.
More than 11 years later, the album’s songs are once again bringing fans together.
The tour is presented by 1020 Cartel and MODAR and deliberately uses an intimate, stripped-back format, with Mankayi at the centre alongside a live band.
Upcoming performances include Cape Town on 5 September, Johannesburg on 19 September, Durban on 7 November and East London on 13 and 14 November, with the tour continuing into 2027.
