Nascimento – Why I Had To Leave Sundowns

Royal AM defender Ricardo Nascimento has finally spoken out why he had to leave Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Brazilian defender left Sundowns in January before his contract would have expired in June 2022.

Nascimento has now for a first time opened up about the decision to leave Masandawana and revealed he was left with little choice by the club, who desperately wanted to register January signing Erwin Saavedra.

“Sundowns had too many foreign players and my contract was ending in June,” Nascimento told SunSport.

“However, they had the option to renew. They had two options [for me], it was to stop training with them in January and go to Brazil and come back in July. That wasn’t good for me not to play for six months.

“Then I said it was better we cancel the contract and that’s why I’m here at Royal AM.”

The 33-year-old won four league titles as well as one Telkom Knockout trophy, one MTN8 title, the Nedbank Cup, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup during his time with Sundowns.
