Nadia Nakai on moving on from AKA

South African rapper Nadia Nakai has revealed that she is ready to move on after losing her boyfriend Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, popularly known as AKA in 2023.

NADIA NAKAI: ‘I DON’T WANT TO LOVE A GHOST’

Naaa Mean hitmaker Nadia Nakai sat down with L-Tido on his podcast to chat about her personal journey of love, loss and moving on after the death of her boyfriend rapper AKA. AKA was shot dead outside of Wish Restaurant on Florida Road, Durban on 10 February 2023. At the time, Nadia and AKA were dating for over a year.

Nadia explained that she does want to have a life partner, this comes as speculation grew surrounding her potential romance with South African musician Pholoso Masombuka, popularly known as Toss.

“I eventually do want a life partner,” she said.

“I’ve mourned, I’ve healed, I’ve been respectful,” she continued.

She went on to say that she does not want to spend her life loving a ghost. Nadia explained that she will always love AKA, but wants to move on.

“AKA has been dead longer than I was with him when he was alive,” she said.

“I don’t want to spend the rest of my life by myself. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life loving a ghost. And I love him. And I’ll always love him. He’ll always have a special space in my heart, but I’m ready to move on,” she continued.

NADIA NAKAI OPENS UP ABOUT AKA ON ‘YOUNG, FAMOUS AND AFRICAN’

AKA and Nadia’s romance was highly publicised on Young, Famous and African, the Netflix reality series she starred in. She explained that she always told people she was fine, but she had to go to therapy.

“It’s difficult, just maneuvering life, you know? Low-key I’m not fine, and I know I need to go to therapy. But I don’t see that happening any time soon… I just have too much to unpack,” she said to Fantana.

Nadia also broke down explaining that AKA’s mom, Lynn Forbes lived with her for a month so she wasn’t left alone. While her friends would keep her on “suicide watch.”

“A lot of people don’t understand how I’m alone a lot of the time,” said Nadia.

“Kiernan’s mom literally lived with me for a month to just make sure I am not by myself. I couldn’t do it, I was on suicide watch and then there was the day where I actually was by myself. I realised that I can’t sit in this house I have to work,” she continued.
