Sixteen people have died after a bus overturned on the N1 near Touws River in the Western Cape.

According to Cape Town Etc, the bus was carrying 73 passengers when it crashed shortly after midnight on Thursday morning.

The crash reportedly happened at around 12:40am and left emergency workers dealing with a devastating scene on one of the country’s major transport routes.

Western Cape Mobility Chief Director of Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, confirmed the death toll and said two other people sustained serious injuries.

“Tragically, 16 people have lost their lives, while two others sustained serious injuries,” Bezuidenhout said, according to Cape Town Etc.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene

Emergency services responded to the crash after the bus overturned on the highway.

Cape Town Etc reported that teams arrived to assist the injured and manage the crash scene.

The full extent of the other injuries has not yet been confirmed in the source article.

Authorities have also not yet confirmed what caused the bus to overturn.

Major shock for families and communities

The crash has sent shock through the community, with many families now facing the painful wait for more information.

The N1 is a key route used by long-distance buses, private vehicles and freight transport.

A crash of this scale affects not only those directly involved, but also families, emergency workers and surrounding communities.

Cause still unclear

At this stage, the cause of the crash has not been confirmed.

No details were provided on whether weather, road conditions, mechanical issues or driver-related factors played a role.

Officials are expected to continue assessing the scene and gathering information.

The accident adds to ongoing concerns about road safety on major South African routes, especially during late-night and long-distance travel.

More details are expected as authorities complete their initial checks and identify the victims.
