Myeni – Why I Choose Pirates Over Chiefs & Downs

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sifiso Myeni has revealed how one call from Dr. Irvin Khoza has made him pick the Buccaneers instead of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.

The former Bidvest Wits captain, who is now playing his trade in Botswana’s First Division for VTM Football Club, exclusively spoke to iDiski Times journalist Sinethemba Makonco about his career.

The 34-year-old is currently on the verge of leading VTM to their first ever promotion to the Botswana Premier League, but was wanted by all three of Mzansi’s top clubs after staring for Bidvest Wits in the early days of his career.

“Because [with] Sundowns, I had to negotiate a lot of things. You say you want this. They say ‘No, we’re gonna give you this.’ I say ‘No, this is what I want. Don’t tell me about bonuses and what. This is what I want. So we negotiated for long, and I was ‘hey, these ones…’,” he told iDiski Times.

“Then Chiefs put in an offer to say this is what we can offer. I’m like, ‘Okay, if you guys say you’re going to offer me this, this is what I want. Please come back to me.’

“But with Pirates, I got a call, one call. From the person, you can’t even say no to. I got a call from the Chairman direct. ‘Yes, boy.’ So I don’t know who am I speaking to. I’m just speaking. ‘No, you are speaking to the chairman of Orlando Pirates.’

“[I’m like] ‘Sorry, sorry, sorry.’ Already I’m calling him Mr Chairman. ‘Sorry, sorry, Chairman’.

“[He continued] ‘Okay. This is me. I have already spoken to your team, and I want you at Pirates. So I’m done with your team. So the only person that’s left is you. What do you want?’

“‘Okay. This is what I want. Chairman, [I want] 1, 2, 3.’ [He says] ‘Okay. Sharp. Done. See you tomorrow’.

“You see, it’s already [done]. There’s ‘no, okay. no, I look for what you want, and think about it and come back to you’. No [it was] ”Okay, Chairman, this is what I want. This is the thing that I want. If you give me this thing, I’m all yours’.”

Myeni played in 130 games for Pirates, scoring 17 goals and setting up 16 more.

You can read the full interview with Myeni, where he also spoke about how he ended up playing in Botswana, in this week’s edition of the iDiski Times newspaper, which is freely available on our website.
