Limpopo police have launched a manhunt for the killer of 12-year-old Adivhawo Molamabu, who was brutally murdered while selling vegetables in Ha-Ravele village in Limpopo on Sunday.
Her half-naked body was discovered in the bushes near a farm in the village, with signs suggesting that she may have been strangled.
The girl’s mother, who did not wish to be named, said the family grew concerned on Sunday evening when it was getting dark and her daughter had not returned home.
“Together with the family and neighbours we searched for her across the village following different leads, but we couldn’t find her and decided to report her missing.”
The mother said Adivhawo and her siblings sold vegetables around the village on weekends to supplement their income.
“I am heartbroken – seeing her lifeless body in that state will haunt me for the rest of my life.
“I know we are poor, but my child didn’t deserve to die such a painful death,” she said.
“All I want is for the perpetrator to be arrested. I am pleading with anyone who saw him to report this to the police.”
Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said Adivhawo’s half-naked body was found with signs suggesting that she may have been strangled.
“[According to] preliminary reports the girl was last seen with an African man walking towards the village,” he said.
Ledwaba said police investigations are ongoing, with a murder case opened and a possible rape case pending post-mortem results.
Police are asking anyone with information that may lead to the suspect’s arrest to report to Sergeant Romeo Mbelengwa, the investigating officer, at 072 981 7722 or the toll-free Crime Stop number, 0860 10111.
