Ex-Orlando Pirates striker Austin Muwowo has found a new home at Zesco United a month after leaving the Soweto giants for free.
The nine-time Zambian champions confirmed Muwowo’s signing on August 6 on a permanent deal.
Muwowo returns to Zambia three years after leaving Nkana to embark on what would become an unsuccessful stint at Pirates, where he managed just a goalless four league games.
The 25-year-old striker has been training with Zesco for over a fortnight. “Zesco United is delighted to announce the signing of former Orlando Pirates winger Austin Muwowo,” Zesco stated.
“Muwowo has penned a two-year contract agreement with the former League champions.”
Muwowo returns to the City of Ndola, where he played for Zesco’s town rivals Forest Rangers before moving to South Africa.
The forward was on loan at Forest from the record 13-time Zambian champions Nkana before his move south during im 2019. He walked away with the 2019 Zambian Footballer of The Year Award.
He is on record saying he never failed at the Soweto giants and believes he would have proved himself if he had gotten a chance to play. Muwowo said former Pirates coach Rulani Mokwena and Jozef Zinnbauer kept promising him game time, but to no avail.
“I had a difficult time since my arrival from Zambia in 2019. People were expecting a lot. I did everything possible to prove that I deserved game time at Pirates.
“Coach Rhulani used to tell me that he would play me, but he will leave me out of the starting line-up. Then arrived Zinnbauer, who asked why I wasn’t playing. He also used to make promises but put me on the bench,” he told Isolezwe.
Meanwhile, Muwowo’s become the 2021/22 FAZ Super League runners-up eighth signing as Zesco begins its quest on August 20 to reclaim the Zambian title they relinquished to Red Arrows.
Muwowo also makes Zesco’s roster for their 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup campaign that kicks off this September.
