Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that controversial blogger Musa Khawula “is alive and well in our correctional facility”, where he is serving a 60-day sentence.
This statement was made to address rumours that Khawula had died.
Recently, Khawula appeared in court wearing orange prison clothes.
He had made accusations on social media against Nozuko Mbalula, politician Fikile Mbalula’s wife, and Michelle Perrow, claiming they paid bribes to get government contracts worth R150-million between 2013 and 2019.
In response, Fikile Mbalula shared court documents showing that Khawula has been ordered to pay damages, cover legal costs, and remove the defamatory statements from his social media account within 48 hours.
Khawula is currently in jail for not showing up in a Gauteng court.
He was arrested on 9 July at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court during a hearing related to a murder charge.
He was attending a murder trial for the alleged killing of his boyfriend in March 2022 when the arrest happened.
His next court appearance is scheduled for 2 September at the same court.
When asked about the death rumours, Nxumalo said, “People like spreading unnecessary stories. I don’t know why they’d do that. But I can confirm that he is in our correctional facility and is serving his time,” according to TimesLive.
