A murder suspect in KwaZulu-Natal made the mistake of getting a lift from police while trying to escape.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that police arrested a 19-year-old suspect wanted for the murder of 21-year-old Khanya Mthembu, who was allegedly stabbed to death in the Mzingazi area on 8 September.
On Wednesday night, 11 September, police in Richards Bay received information that the suspect was hitchhiking in the Madlankala area of Esikhaleni, attempting to flee to Nongoma.
Acting quickly, a police officer in an unmarked car offered the suspect a ride.
The officer then stopped at a filling station and called for backup, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Netshiunda explained that the suspect and the victim had argued at a tavern, and after the victim left, the suspect followed and fatally stabbed him near a sports field.
The suspect is set to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 13 September.
