MTN8 final: Orlando Pirates’ opponents revealed

Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC will meet again in the MTN8 final.

The two teams faced each other last year in the final of the MTN8, which the Buccaneers controversially claimed a 3-1 win.

Lehlogonolo Mojela opened the scoring, but Monnapule Saleng equalised just before half-time. Two late goals from Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng sealed the win but it was the second Pirates goal which raised eyebrows.

Mofokeng’s quick thinking saw him make a quick pass to Mabasa, who scored.

Stellenbosch player protested the decision, especially after one player was summoned by the referee and the free-kick was not taken close to where the foul had occurred. The goal stood and the Buccaneers claimed the title for the third consecutive season.

Pirates looking to bury Stellenbosch in the MTN8 final

The Buccaneers reached their fourth consecutive MTN8 final after edging out Mamelodi Sundowns 4-1 on penalties. The two giants played to a 2-2 draw on aggregate and penalties were needed to separate them on Saturday afternoon.

Stellies, on the other hand, secured another final by edging out Sekhukhune United 3-1 on aggregate. The Cape side will face Pirates in the MTN8 final, which will be a repeat of last year’s final.

Can Stellies upset Pirates?
