MTN8: City skipper Mkhize refuses to undermine wounded Chiefs

Cape Town City skipper Thamsanqa Mkhize refuses to undermine a wounded Kaizer Chiefs’ who have had a lacklustre run in the new season so far.

The 2018 MTN8 champions, City are set to welcome Chiefs at Athlone Stadium and Mkhize is ready for a different Chiefs.

Mkhize will lead Eric Tinkler’s troops are up against a team that is yet to taste victory in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season so far.

CITY SKIPPER MKHIZE WARY OF WOUNDED CHIEFS

The former Maritzburg United defender, Mkhize, and his City teammates are enjoying fine form as they are yet to lose since the start of the new campaign.

Looking at the log standings, they sit second behind Mamelodi Sundowns who have also won their first two league matches.

However, the same cannot be said about Chiefs who have drawn to Chippa United and lost their second latch to Masandawana, but Mkhize refuses to read into that.

“We mustn’t look at how Chiefs have started the season and think we will have it easy,” Mkhize told the media.

“Chiefs are still a big team and their long trophy drought motivates them to go for a kill, knowing that if they win four games in this competition they are champions.

“They are so eager to make their fans happy, so they won’t be pushovers at all.”

MKHIZE REFLECTS ON GOOD START COMPARED TO CHIEFS

The Bafana Bafana right-back, Mkhize warns his teammates not to be complacent and underestimate Molefi Ntseki’s Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.

“Yes, the good start we have had is encouraging but we can’t be overconfident and rely on that,” Mkhize added.

“We still have to work very hard to make sure we get the result that will see us go through to the next phase of the tournament.”

On the same note, Tinkler said he is not really concerned about Chiefs but he is having sleepless nights on their next league encounter against his former club, SuperSport United.

“That game against Chiefs is not really my concern but the next one, SuperSport away on Friday night,” Tinkler said.

“Can we ensure that we put on a good performance against Chiefs and then refocus again on the league because the league is just as important if not more important than the MTN8.”
