Mthandazo Gatya is not a household name just yet. But he is behind one of the biggest Afro-Soul songs which was released in 2021. The soulful musician is the vocalist behind the street hit single Senzeni, which led to a lot of confusion as he needed to reassert that he is the vocalist behind the song and not a woman as it was supposed.
Having begun his music career in 2021, it comes as no surprise that he has not broken the ceiling to become a household name. But seemingly, he does have an avid following on social media as he went viral this week and topped it off by ending the week by materialising his dreams. This was all thanks to South African social media. Thereafter, Anele Mdoda and Black Coffee for intervening for the final surprise for Gatya.
Mthandazo Gatya goes viral
It all started earlier this week when Mthandazo Gatya took to Twitter to share his TikTok video doing the Open Verse Challenge to John Legend’s latest single Nervous. Gatya confirmed that after putting his own local twist to get the attention of the internationally recognised and Grammy winning musician, he managed to get John Legend’s attention and thanked his followers for their efforts to push his video.
Thinking that this would just be a celebratory moment. In another episode of Black Twitter working together to see a dream realised for a fellow South African. Tweeps took to the timeline to share the video again for John Legend to see it again and compliment the video.
But it was not just John Legend that would go on the blue app to continue the virality of the video. Other ZAlebs like Mivhango’s Dingaan Mokebe also jumped on the challenge which only made Gatya trending even more.
As the video continued to become viral, South African Twitter took to the timeline to call on prominent South African producers to collaborate with the talented and soulful musician. One of the first producer-DJs to assert their intentions to do just that was Black Coffee, a dream come true for Gatya. But Black Coffee did not just stop there.
Mthandazo Gatya shares the stage with John Legend
Anele Mdoda was the first to alert us that John Legend was in South Ah. A tweet which immediately got the attention of social media as they asserted that the All Of Me hitmaker must make time to actually collaborate with Gatya.
Mdoda then confirmed that this actually happened. A fact which was asserted by Black Coffee thanking Legend for specifically coming to work with Gatya. It was this tweet, which led many to believe that Black Coffee was responsible for getting him to come to South Africa.
In light of the news, tweeps then started sharing videos of Gatya on stage with John Legend giving a live rendition of the video which has ensured that he is on the right track to becoming the household name he deserves to be. And personally, we love to see all of it.
