Jacob Zuma’s nephew, a senior traditional leader in KwaZulu-Natal, will not be joining the Umkhonto Wesizwe party (MK), choosing to remain with the ANC.
“I won’t leave the ANC, and uBaba [Jacob Zuma] knows that,” Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma from Impendle told Scrolla.Africa at Tuesday’s King Shaka Day event.
“But that doesn’t mean we are not family. We are still united and support each other as Zumas – but politically, I’m still in the ANC.”
The inkosi has backed his uncle since 2006, when Thabo Mbeki removed him as deputy president.
He opposed calls for Zuma to resign as president in 2018, claiming Western countries were behind it.
In 2021, he criticised Zuma’s arrest and supported him until he received medical parole.
Zuma missed the King Shaka Day event and attended a chief’s coronation in the North West instead.
