Dr Mpho Phalatse has once again been ousted as the Executive Mayor in the City of Johannesburg.
Phalatse was voted out on Thursday, 26 January after a motion of no confidence was tabled against her.
MPHO PHALATSE NO LONGER CITY OF JOHANNESBURG MAYOR
A total of 140 members voted in favour while 129 were against the motion at the Johannesburg Council sitting in Braamfontein.
As previously reported, Dr Mpho Phalatse’s mayoral chain has been in jeopardy since the Democratic Alliance (DA) had a fall-out with the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in September 2022. This led to Phalatse subsequently being voted out, but the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg then nullified the move after it found that her removal was unlawful.
The PA offered to re-join the multi-party coalition, under the condition that it is given two MMC positions in the council. However, the DA wants the PA to have one MMC position and a chairperson position for one of the Section 79 committees.

ActionSA in the City said following negotiations between the PA and the governing coalition, it can confirm that talks have failed and the multi-party coalition will face a motion of no confidence without the majority to defend the Executive Mayor.
“Final negotiations ultimately failed because the DA refused to listen to the opinions of all of its coalition partners who wrote to the DA urging that the original proposal that had been agreed to by all parties and accepted by the PA, should be honoured,” the party said.
The ANC’s Dada Morero, who temporarily took over after she was ousted said they confident that the City of Johannesburg will have a new mayor.
Morero said they need 50+1 in order to remove the mayoral chain from Phalatse, in simple terms they need 136 members to vote against have the numbers.
