Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Mpumalanga police commissioner, has been suspended.
According to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, national police spokesman, Manamela was suspended by national commissioner General Fannie Masemola due to charges of misconduct.
Manamela allegedly demanded that the regions under her supervision organise “welcoming functions” for her. She is said to have insisted on getting gifts at these functions.
The allegations were contained in a report written by Lieutenant-General Thulani Ntobela, the former Mpumalanga police commissioner and proprietor of The-i-Firm, a forensic investigations firm.
Several senior executives in Mpumalanga urged Ntobela to compile the report.
“I was approached by the whistle-blower, who wanted to remain anonymous, to investigate the abuse of power by the provincial commissioner, a misuse of tea club funds, nepotism and possible corruption,” Ntobela’s report read.
According to the study, more than R1.7 million was allegedly collected from police stations. The donations were used to cover the costs of three occasions as well as speaker gifts.
Gender-based violence prayer days were designated for the events. Manamela was also a guest speaker at the events.
