AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho threw his silver medal to a young fan and insulted the referee after his side lost 5-2 on penalties in Wednesday night’s Europa League final.
Mourinho, 60, lost his first European final after the match between record champions Sevilla and his Roma was dead-logged at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time.
In the following penalty shoot out, his Roma stars missed two spot-kicks, while Sevilla were perfect – well nearly after Gonzalo Montiel initially missed the deciding penalty but it had to be retaken due to encroachment and he then scored the winner.
After the final whistle, Mourinho and his players received their silver medal, but many of them took them straight off their necks. Mourinho threw his into the stands and a young Roma fan caught is as he left the pitch.
In the press conference, he expressed his anger with match official Anthony Taylor, labelling his performance “a scandal”.
“This is a European final and with this kind of refereeing, it is hard to accept,” Mourinho said, as per the Guardian.
“If we talk about refereeing situations, it’s not two or three: it is many, quite apart from the big decisions. Those of us who have been in football a long time realise immediately what is going on.
“[Lorenzo] Pellegrini falls in box and given a yellow card; [Lucas] Ocampos did exactly the same thing and he doesn’t get one. It’s a scandal. VAR called the referee and shames Ocampos but there’s no card given.
“[Érik] Lamela – who, by the way, scored one of the penalties – deserved a second yellow but didn’t get it. And let’s not even talk about the big decisions. That’s just the small details.”
When asked about the retake of Sevilla’s fourth penalty by Montiel, Mourinho insisted he told his players to go out with dignity.
“I told my players you can lose a match but never your dignity. We lost today but we did not lose our dignity,” he added.
Moments later, though, Mourinho walked up to referee Taylor in the VIP parking area of the Puskas Arena in Budapest and called his performance a “f*cking disgrace”.
