Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlophie Motsepe revealed that he discussed the appointment of Flemming Berg with the current technical team before making his decision.
Sundowns secured the highly-rated former DBU Development Manager of their new Sporting Director before officially unveiling him at their headquarters on Monday afternoon.
In the past, their former manager Pitso Mosimane often expressed his disillusion of the role but Motsepe says their coaching trio of Manqoba Mngqithi, Rulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela welcome the arrival of the former Chelsea scout.
“We did have very, very early-stage discussions with our coaches about the position, I kept them in my confidence,” Motsepe said on Monday at Chloorkop.
“I spoke to them individually about this decision. And I think for them, they understood because I did reason with them and I said, you know our club needs to take this, this new direction, where there is this connected role in that a person is playing for many reasons.
“You know, those who are able to listen to these discussions are really spoiled. So in that case, I think it was something that they also understood, being forward-thinking leaders that we always can improve. And they understood that this was an important step for the football club.”
Berg himself addressed his incoming and suggested he is excited to meet with the current crop of coaches to see their current methods and discuss innovative methods for the future progression of Masandawana.
“I’ve watched all the games, I watched a lot of interviews with the coaches and I’m looking forward to meeting with them to talk football, to talk about strategy, decisions and how they are working with the players,” Berg said when asked about his knowledge of the trio.
“I also looked into the background and I’m happy with the academic approach to it and the interest of the game – I myself have a science degree from the Copenhagen University of Sports and Science and have an interest in that part of the football game as well.
“So I cant wait to into these talks and discussions, I’m sure it will be rewarding for all of us.”
