Motsepe challenges Africa to conquer world football

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has challenged the continent to move beyond making history at the FIFA World Cup and start believing in its ability to lift football’s most coveted trophy.

Motsepe believes an African nation has the potential to become world champions, insisting that the continent must set its sights on the ultimate prize as it continues to develop its football structures and competitiveness on the international stage.

“An African team must win the World Cup,” Motsepe said during CAF’s strategy conference, where football leaders discussed the continent’s development priorities and the future direction of the game.

His bold declaration comes as African football continues to make strides towards closing the gap between its national teams and the traditional powerhouses of world football.

Although Africa has yet to produce a World Cup finalist, Morocco’s remarkable performance at the 2022 tournament in Qatar demonstrated that the continent can compete with the world’s best.

The Atlas Lions rewrote the history books by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals, defeating Belgium, Spain and Portugal before their campaign ended against eventual champions France.

Morocco’s achievement raised expectations about what African teams can accomplish at future World Cups and strengthened calls for greater investment in player development, coaching and football infrastructure.

Before Morocco’s historic run, Cameroon had come closest in 1990, reaching the quarter-finals in Italy. Senegal repeated that achievement in 2002, following their famous group-stage victory over defending champions France.

Ghana also came agonisingly close to reaching the semi-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Black Stars were eliminated by Uruguay in a dramatic quarter-final after Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty in extra time following Luis Suárez’s deliberate handball on the goal line.

Nigeria and Algeria have also enjoyed notable campaigns, reaching the round of 16 on several occasions.

However, Motsepe’s ambition goes beyond celebrating past achievements. His message is that African football must now turn its potential into the consistency required to challenge for the world title.

Achieving that goal will require sustained investment in grassroots football, stronger domestic competitions, improved coaching standards and better development pathways for young players.

CAF’s strategy discussions come at a time when African nations are seeking to build on the continent’s growing reputation and ensure that historic performances become the foundation for future success.

For Motsepe, the ultimate measure of progress will not simply be how far an African team advances in the World Cup, but whether one can go all the way and be crowned world champions.

With Morocco having already broken the semi-final barrier, the question now is whether another African nation can take the next historic step and bring the World Cup trophy to the continent.
