AmaZulu FC goalkeeper Veli Mothwa has broken a record that was set by a Zambian international Kalililo Kakonje.
Usuthu is now on a fifth clean sheet in a row which takes the club to 15 clean sheets this season. Out of those clean sheets, the 31-year-old has 13 under his belt which meant that he has surpassed the record of the 2007/08 season of Kalililo Kakonje.
Mothwa played a major role this season in AmaZulu’s campaign in CAF Champions League and in the DStv Premiership, while he also managed to get a Bafana Bafana call-up. The former Chippa United shot-stopper keeps on improving, and has built on last season where he finished with 11 clean sheets.
Mothwa said he wants to keep the good form going and with two games remaining in the season, he is hoping for two more clean-sheets.
“To be honest I feel good. For my side, personally and since I started playing every season I have finished on top of my clean sheets and last season I finished with eleven,” Mothwa said.
“So this season, me and the defenders, we made an agreement that we need to take the team to 15 clean sheets for the whole season but now we on 13, and we are left with two games.
“So, for now, I feel good. I’m still saying the job is not done yet, we still have another two games to play.”
“I remember Siyanda Xulu telling me something, saying if you are a goalkeeper, if you make two crucial saves, the team will never score (against) him.
“So even our defenders, we normally talk about this before the games start, saying we not conceding today, if we concede it’s better to be one, not more than one. Since now we came back everything is all about clean sheets, that’s the story of our lives up until the season ends.”
AmaZulu now sit on 40 points on the log with just two games to go.
