A mother in Cape Town has taken her son out of Lenteguer High School in Mitchell’s Plain after alleged racial attacks against the boy, who is black.
Last month, the parent informed the school that some of the coloured learners were bullying her child.
“My son has been bullied at that school for too long; I can’t let it continue,” she said.
The school promised to fix the problem, but nothing changed.
“It’s now almost the end of August, and my child is still being bullied. I’ve decided to take him out of that school. I’d rather have him stay home until I find a new school than risk his life,” the mother said.
Her son, along with other black learners, has been beaten up at the school and forced to pay money to coloured learners, who claim the school belongs to them and is not for black learners.
Scrolla.Africa reported last week that black learners at the school were being bullied.
Some parents have asked the provincial education department to move their children to other schools because they fear for their safety.
The education department responded that the school is aware of the problem, which they believe is related to gang activity and not race, but will investigate the allegations.
Millicent Merton from the education department said, “The school was alerted to allegations that learners were asked to pay protection money.
“One learner has been identified as the alleged perpetrator, and the school is taking disciplinary action. The learner has been suspended as a precautionary measure.”
