A woman and her son have been arrested for the murder of her husband in Maubane village, near Makapanstad, North West Province.

North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, said 36-year-old Refilwe Molekoa and her 19-year-old son, Goitsemang Madibela, were arrested on 2 September.

They appeared in the Moretele Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The 63-year-old Lucas Molekoa and his stepson were drinking and watching a football match when an argument between the two turned physical. Refilwe tried to stop the fight. When her husband started overpowering her son, she allegedly hit him on the head with a hard object.

Funani said Lucas fell down, and Refilwe and Goitsemang then allegedly strangled him with a rope. Afterwards, they called for help, claiming that a robber had strangled him.

Neighbours called the police, and after questioning, both Refilwe and her son were arrested.

The two will remain in custody until their bail hearing on 13 September.

North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, praised the local police for their quick action and the investigation that led to the arrests.
