Mosimane on the verge of rewriting Champions League history | African News

Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane can enter into CAF Champions League history books if his charges come out on top and defeat Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the final on Monday night.

The South African, who boasts of three Champions League medals won in 2016 with Mamelodi Sundowns and two successive ones with the Red Devils in 2020 and 2021, could become the first coach to win Africa’s most prestigious club tournament three times in a row.

“I want to win every competition Ahly are involved in. Our millions of supporters expect nothing less,” Mosimane told the Egyptian media.

“It’s an honour, a privilege, and it’s historical for our club to make a third cup final in a row because we have never made it. Even though we had made a lot of cup finals, but we had never made it three times in a row. As much as it is important for the history of the club, we are not fixated on that. We are fixated on the match,” Mosimane said ahead of Monday’s final.

He adds: “Because what is the point of making the third final in a row and you don’t win it? Our mind is not on that. Our mind is on winning the cup final. Of course, we acknowledge that we have made the third cup final in a row, and it’s a big step because no team does that.”

Winning this year’s edition will also put Mosimane on par with former club coach Manuel Jose who won the title four times in 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2008.

“Manuel Jose had several spells as Ahly’s coach and achieved a great deal, but he could not win every competition. I do not know whether I can surpass him regarding the number of titles Ahly wins, but I am certainly going to try.”

Kickoff at Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, Morocco, is at 21:00.
