A Grade 12 student at Eesterivier Secondary School in Cape Town wants to quit school because she has been bullied for five years.
Last week, the mother’s daughter caught her crying after being bullied again.
“I went to school to pick up my daughter and one of the bullies was there. I asked why they were bullying my child, and the bully attacked me with an umbrella,” the mother said.
“I grabbed the umbrella and defended myself. Other students were watching.”
The bully called her mother, who came and attacked the parent, stabbing her in the head with the umbrella and a tin opener.
“I had to run and hide with my daughter.”
She reported the incident to the school principal, who told her the department had asked the school to handle the problem.
She has no faith that the school can solve the problem. “How can they say that when my child has been bullied for years?” she asked.
“The school and the education department have failed us,” the mother said.
She reported the assault to the police.
The Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said they were not aware of the bullying.
“The district met with the victim’s parent and will talk to the bullies’ parents. We need to investigate further,” Hammond said.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said a case of assault with intent to cause serious injury has been registered.
