Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed what it takes to clinch the DStv Premiership title.

Sundowns continued their dominance in the South African top-flight winning their sixth league title in a row.

Mokwena’s troops made history by becoming the first team in South Africa to seal the league title with seven matches left to finish the campaign. The feat it’s an indication of their class and superiority.

The Tshwane giants were crowned champions on Tuesday 16 May. This was after their last league match against relegation threatened side Maritzburg United which ended 1-1.

RULANI MOKWENA SAYS WINNING THE LEAGUE REQUIRES CONSISTENCY

According Mokwena, his side has been winning titles in the past seasons because they have been consistent in their performances and grinding the results.

“I’m proud of what the players have done this season, over 10 months. This is a competition that you have to win with consistency,” said Mokwena.

“With seven matches left we won the championship, tell me if we’ve lost a match, same hunger.

“We might not have played well in some games, but one thing you’ll never criticise this team for is intensity, commitment, desire and hunger. No chance.”

Mokwena further believes his troops deserve more credit, noise and attention than they are getting for their achievement.

Masandawana are undefeated in 24 league matches since Mokwena took charge as head coach from Manqoba Mngqithi back in October 2022.

“To do it the way this group of players have done it deserves more credit than what is given and a lot more noise than what they are getting because they’ve been magnificent over 10 months,” he added.

With the league done and dusted, Masandawana’s focus now shifts to CAF Champions League.

They will host Morocco giants Wydad AC in the second leg of the semi-final at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday 20 May. The first leg ended 0-0.

Kickoff is at 3pm.
