Mokwena on possibilities of splitting squad for busy schedule

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has weighed in on the possibility of splitting the squad amid a busy fixture schedule.

Bafana Ba Style could find themselves split in half as the club will be participating in different competitions and has to find a way to juggle with their fixture congestion.

Mokwena’s men will be taking part in the DStv Premiership, Carling Knockout Cup, CAF Champions League, and the African Football League this month.

The busy schedule has become an issue in modern-day football.

And for the Tshwane giants, things are about to boil over into a bizarre scenario, as the PSL is not willing to accommodate their busy schedule as per reports.

On Tuesday, the PSL launched the Carling Knockout, with the dates, venues, and kick-off times set to be confirmed in due course. However, the competition itself will start this month.

If it happens that Masandawana has to split their squad, Mokwena does have the luxury of a good enough squad to field in all the competitions.

RULANI MOKWENA ON SQUAD SPLITTING

Mokwena has had his say on the issue as he was speaking during the official launch of the Carling Knockout.

“I hope it doesn’t come to that [splitting the squad]. My hope is that we are always able to put out the best team on the pitch,” said Mokwena.

“And also to make sure all of us are available to assist and support the players during the 90 minutes.”

GIVING OTHER PLAYERS GAME TIME

Mokwena was further asked if splitting the squad wouldn’t benefit fringe players with game time.

“Well, that’s what we did last season. We had a squad of 36 I think and we played all 35 players without any splits,” he added.

“That’s the work that we have to make sure that each and every single player understands the demands, style of play and schemes.

“Now, we got to make sure we are ready for each and every game this season. We are going to take it one game at a time.”
