Phuti Mohafe’s decision to leave Polokwane City in search of a “new challenge” has so far failed to produce the career revival he had hoped for, with the Marumo Gallants coach now facing mounting pressure to turn around the club’s fortunes.
Mohafe left Polokwane City in June after spending two seasons at the helm of Rise and Shine. During his time in Polokwane, the 52-year-old coach established himself as one of the more consistent coaches in the Betway Premiership, guiding City to back-to-back top-eight finishes.
His departure for Marumo Gallants was therefore viewed as a fresh chapter in his coaching career. Mohafe made it clear that he was looking forward to testing himself in a different environment and taking on new challenges with Bathlabani ba Ntwa.
However, the start to his Gallants tenure has been far from ideal.
The Phokeng-based side have gone four league matches without a victory, leaving Mohafe under increasing pressure as he attempts to find a winning formula and stabilise a team that has struggled to produce consistent results.
The poor run has also put his decision to leave Polokwane City under the spotlight. What was supposed to be a step forward in his career has quickly become a battle for survival, with every match now carrying greater significance for the former Rise and Shine mentor.
And on Friday night, Mohafe will face perhaps his most intriguing test yet.
Gallants welcome Polokwane City to the Royal Bafokeng Stadium at 7:30pm, giving Mohafe an opportunity to change the narrative — but against the club he left only a few months ago.
The fixture promises to be an emotionally charged encounter, with Mohafe facing the players and club officials with whom he worked during his successful two-year spell in Polokwane.
City, meanwhile, will be determined to ensure that their former coach does not use them as the launchpad for a turnaround.
For Mohafe, victory would mean much more than three points. It could provide the confidence and breathing space needed to ease the pressure surrounding his position and potentially kick-start his Gallants project.
A defeat, however, would further deepen the crisis and leave questions about whether his decision to leave Polokwane City was the right one.
Having twice guided City to top-eight finishes, Mohafe knows what it takes to build a competitive side in the top flight. But his immediate challenge is to replicate that success at Gallants before his difficult start becomes a defining chapter of his tenure.
Friday’s encounter is therefore more than just another league fixture.
For Mohafe, it is a chance to prove that the “new challenge” he was looking for can still become a successful one — even if the road to achieving it has started with a major setback.
