Polokwane City boss Phuti Mohafe has explained why he took a phone call in the middle of their colossal MTN8 quarter final clash with Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.

Polokwane’s 1-0 defeat to Masandawana at the Lucas Moripe Stadium came after an extra time own goal from Thabang Matuludi.

What caught the eye of many, however, was Mohafe’s extra time phone call. He has since explained that he was communicating with the technical team.

“With me calling, I have to get advice from my other technical team members,” he told the media.

“It’s not a one-man show. So I had to call and finalise what was on my mind, and we had to discuss that before I made my final decision.”

On the game, Mohafe added that the slow start gave the team confidence but he felt they should have come out with more intent in the second half.

“Going into half-time at 0-0, it was good for us. We made the very same mistake again of sitting back and allowing them to gain confidence. It was as if we told them to go and sit.”

“We sat back a little too deep, and that frustrated them a bit with transitions leading to the red card of the Sundowns keeper [Denis Onyango].”

“We should have scored three or four goals from those transitions, I think, had we been composed. We were unfortunate to score that goal for them. They didn’t score, we have beaten ourselves.”

Polokwane will next be in action on 14 September when they take on AmaZulu FC at Peter Mokaba Stadium in the Betway Premiership.
