Mofokeng, Mabasa and De Jong

Orlando Pirates are set to welcome Stellenbosch FC striker Andre de Jong but where does this leave Tshegofatso Mabasa?

The Buccanees are currently top of the Betway Premiership after 12 matches and could extend their lead when the league resume later this month.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s charges have already won three finals this season and the signing of De Jong could booster their striking department. The Kiwi has been on Orlando Pirates’ radaw since the winter transfer window and could give the team depth especially in the number 10 department.

His signing means Mabasa could be on his way. The talented 29-year-old forward has been with the Buccaneers for over six years becoming one of their all-time leading goalscorers.

In recent weeks, the ex-Bloemfontein Celtic star has been linked with Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs. His future at the club remains uncertain with De Jong joining the Soweto giants.

Orlando Pirates could lose Mofokeng

With Mabasa set to leave at the end of the season, the Buccaneers could also lose talented winger Relebohile Mofokeng.

The 21-year-old is currently with the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“I think if something can be available for me, I can get the chance somewhere in another country,” Mofokeng told the media on his potential move away from Orlando Pirates.

“I think it will be a very good move. This tournament (AFCON) is very important [if I am to attract overseas interest]. When I get a chance, I’ll just have to grab it.”

“I think the most important thing is mentality. Even if a person is bigger, the mentality matters the most because if I tell myself that I’m going to get past this guy, I’m going to do it.”

Orlando Pirates are looking to win their first league title in 14 years. Despite winning eight triphies in six years, the Buccaneers have fallen short of winning the Betway Premiership in recent seasons.

Can Pirates win the league?
