South African social media users have been left with their jaws on the floor after a popular Twitter account shared a photo of King Mswati of Swaziland’s mother Queen Ntfombi Tfwala wearing a Jacob & Co Astronomia Solar Baguette watch that allegedly costs around R14 million. The price of the watch left a bitter taste in many mouths as Tweeps discussed the flaunting of wealth while so many in the world — and in Swaziland — are impoverished.
Many have slammed African leaders who rarely shy away from showing off their wealth despite the struggles of the people they are leading.

A photo of the queen wearing the super expensive time piece was shared on Twitter by a page called @RoyalLeeches. A page that “exposes the extravagant lifestyle of the Swazi royal family”. The page’s bio also calls the family “a bunch of leeches who feed off the hard earned taxes of poor Swazis”.
The post was captioned:
“Extravagance in the face of poverty. King Mswati’s mother, Ntfombi Tfwala wears a Jacob & Co Astronomia Solar Baguette in 18k Rose Gold. Its case and dial is invisibly-set with 382 baguette white diamonds. It’s limited to 18 pieces and retails for $780 000 (R14 200 000).#eSwatini”

What do social media users make of it?
The post received a number of comments from people who seemingly despise leaders who splash money on luxury. Take a look at some of their comments:
“It’s part of Africa’s culture. Leaders show the middle finger to citizens,” one person wrote while another added:
“The psychology of African leaders need to be studied. Like how are they okay with spending crazy money on themselves yet people on the ground are suffering.”
