Mngqithi Questions PSL Awards – iDiski Times

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has questioned the criteria of the PSL awards, despite Sundowns cleaning out every award that they were nominated in.

Mngqithi shared the Coach of the Season accolade with his co-coach Rulani Mokwena, after leading Sundowns to a fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title.

However last season, despite winning the league, the Sundowns duo lost out to Benni McCarthy after he lead AmaZulu to second-place.

“How can you be the coach of the tournament if you didn’t win the tournament, how can you become the player of the tournament if you didn’t win the tournament, ” Mngqithi argued on Ukhozi FM.

“That’s why you will forever say we played well, we made mistakes here, we will try again next time. Yay!

“There’s no playing nice here. If you didn’t win, don’t be too proud of how you played because it means, you’re playing lacked some stuff for you to win the game. Play well, then win, then you put yourself in the right position.

“If we can take everything away, and just say the team that wins the championship or the team that wins the tournament, the coach of the tournament will be easy to choose.”

He then went on to say that former winners won awards based on them winning their respective tournaments or leagues, and not on their style of play.

“There are coaches who played bad football in the past and won the title and also won the awards,” added Manqoba.

“Nobody said but this team was not playing well, this one was playing better. Hey! Who cares who plays well when you don’t win anything.

“If you don’t win, how can Victor gets this award without winning anything? Because when you’ve won there’s no remarks column.”

Apart from Mngqithi and Mokwena sharing the Coach of the Season award, Sundowns players won the DStv Premiership Player’s Player, Defender, Midfielder and Top Goalscorer of the Season, as well as the MTN 8 Last Man Standing and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.
