Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has listed four players who he believes should be considered for PSL Footballer of the Season while lamenting the lack of progress of Kaizer Chiefs playmaker Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.
With the end of the season fast approaching, the Sundowns coach was asked after the 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium which players he feels should be considered for the top honour he listed four serious candidates while stating ‘Mshini’ had the potential to be up there with those players.
The current holder Peter Shalulile appears the favourite to retain the coveted honour with 22 league goals in 28 games this season and just three goals shy of Collins Mbesuma’s record 25-goal haul he achieved with Amakhosi in the 2004/05 season.
“From my team, I think Peter [Shalulile] deserves, Themba Zwane deserves, ‘AJ’ deserves, honestly speaking I think Keagan deserves, Keagan Dolly had a very very good season and for that he deserves,” he said in the post-match press conference on Sunday.
“There’s a young player that I thought maybe could have really set the stage alight this season based on his performances last season. The young Ngcobo from Kaizer Chiefs, the central midfielder, I believe that boy if he had a lot of games there’s a lot he could have offered. But in terms of Player of the Season, I think those I counted, deserve [mention].”
Sundowns are scheduled to face Stellenbosch and Royal AM in their final two league games of the season before the Nedbank Cup final with Marumo Gallants – where they could seal a domestic treble – on 28 May at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
