Mngqithi – I Would Not Say There Is Anyone Who Is Number 1

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has said that Ronwen Williams is not guaranteed his place in the team, and that any of their four goalkeepers could play at any given time.

Williams joined Sundowns at the start of the season and has so far been a constant fixture in the Sundowns team, being selected ahead of Denis Onyango, Reyaad Pieterse and Kennedy Mweene.

But speaking after the 2-1 loss to neighbours SuperSport, Mngqithi re-iterated that no player in Sundowns is guaranteed a starting place.

“It’s not gonna be a rotation, but I would not say there is anyone who is number one at Sundowns,” Mngqithi said at the post-match press conference.

“We’ve got four top goalkeepers that can come in and play at any given time. It was always important for us to induct him very quickly and integrate him into the group, which I believe he has done fairly well.

“But the competition is still wide open, you don’t know how this season is going to finish, and you don’t know what’s going to be happening in the Champions League. When he’s still playing, he must also do the best he can to make sure that he stays there, because in our team, we’ve got too many matches, and everybody else is expected to give us something.

“And when we look at what is happening in training, I can tell you that Denis is looking very good, I can tell you that Reyaad is looking very good,  Kennedy is looking very good. And Ronwen has done very well, to be honest, so the competition is wide open.

“And we would not really want to dwell into who is number one or number two, because we brought him in to come and assist in that space, and he has done fairly well so far.”
