The MK Youth League is determined to take control of the student representative council (SRC) at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and replace the EFF Student Command (EFFSC).
This week, the MK Youth League told students that the EFFSC had let poor students down and that it was time for a change.
The MK Youth League shared its election promises at the Soshanguve South campus earlier this week.
They said they understand the students’ problems and have a clear plan to fix them.
They also accused the ANC-aligned student organisation, Sasco, of misusing money from the Motsepe Foundation, which was supposed to help students.
With the SRC elections scheduled from 3 to 5 September, tensions are high at TUT as different student groups attempt to win the students’ support.
The EFFSC, which leads the SRC, promised to keep working hard for students if re-elected.
They criticised Sasco for not helping students in the past.
The MK Youth League made a strong impression by singing in support of former president Jacob Zuma, the MK party’s leader, and told students they had the answers to their issues.
The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO), which hasn’t participated in the elections for two years, announced its return, promising to work honestly and solve students’ problems.
If re-elected, the Student Christian Organisation (SCO) promised to continue supporting students, while the South African Democratic Student Movement (Sadesmo), which recently won a seat for the first time in two years, vowed to fight corruption and ensure fair treatment for all students.
In last year’s elections, the EFFSC won four seats, Sasco three, and Sadesmo and SCO one each.
